“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”
– Plato
In 2019, Chris Springer and Catherine Rells had a vision to start a program that would not only give back to the community but also bring the joy of music into the lives of underserved youth while mentoring and teaching skills that these students could apply to their own lives.
Music programs in schools tend to be the first area to be impacted when districts and schools are trying to maximize their budgets. That is the foundation of how The House of Music came to be. As Chris and Catherine began to talk to different people about the idea, the more they realized that the need for this program was bigger than imagined.
They found that many schools had students that were formerly and currently unhoused along with at-risk youth. In this fact, they found their purpose. They wanted youth to have the opportunity to fall in love with music. Not just music, but Latin music and learn how to read, write, and play a Latin percussion instrument. It was also in their hearts to give the youth something that they can take with them. At the end of the program, every student that joins and completes the program will take home a brand-new Latin Percussion instrument.
The hope, mission, and vision of the House of Music is that the program brings joy and stands in the gap for the youth that need it the most. To teach and mentor underprivileged youth throughout San Diego to build skills such as work ethic, discipline, teamwork, communication skills, self-esteem, confidence building, and other life skills while also learning and cultivating their love for music.
The House of Music will always strive to impact the community by positively impacting the lives of underserved youth. Please visit www.thehouseofmusic.org for more information on the upcoming fundraiser, Festival del Caribe on May 28th, volunteer opportunities, or to donate.
