Remembering Randy Jones A Legacy of Kindness and Community

Share

Randy was known throughout San Diego not only for his Cy Young Award but for the countless charitable causes he championed. He was a beloved member of the community whose kindness, generosity, and heart left a lasting impression on everyone who had the honor of knowing him. At Home of Guiding Hands, we were lucky to call him not just a supporter, but a true friend.

His relationship with Home of Guiding Hands began by chance. Years ago, when we were still a campus-based organization, Randy bought some ice plants from a group of our clients who were selling garden supplies. That small, simple moment introduced him to our mission of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. From that day on, Randy was all in. Randy often shared that what drew him back year after year was the joy he saw in the people we serve and the sense of family that defines HGH.

Randy had a way of making every person feel seen. For the people we serve, that meant the world. His kindness, consistency, and heart became part of the fabric of HGH, and we are better as an organization because he chose to walk beside us.Edward Hershey, CEO and President of Home of Guiding Hands

Randy believed deeply in creating community. He helped launch our annual Run Walk, a celebration of inclusion, connection, and support. Each year, people we serve walk alongside neighbors, families, and community partners, united for a common cause. This year’s event, taking place on February 7, 2026, will be especially meaningful as we walk in Randy’s honor.

Before the event begins, John and Tammy from KSON will lead the crowd in celebrating Randy’s legacy with a round of applause beneath the starting arch. We are also bringing back the Randy Jones Tent, a space where Randy once greeted families, clients, and supporters with warmth and sincerity. It will now serve as a place to reflect, remember, and reconnect.

Each participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt with a tribute to Randy’s life, symbolizing the steps we take together in his memory.

Randy gave with his whole heart. He showed up, lifted others, and always made time to connect. His legacy of inclusion and joy will be felt every step of the way, this year and for many years to come.

Join us on February 7 to walk in Randy’s footsteps and celebrate the inclusive community he helped build.
