National University hosted its annual Foundation Gala aboard the USS Midway Museum on September 12, 2025, raising more than $800,000, with additional contributions still being received. The event demonstrated the community’s continuing commitment to advancing the university’s mission – opening professional pathways for nontraditional, working, and military students.
Thanks to longstanding university benefactor and presenting sponsor T. Denny Sanford, scholarship donations made during the gala were matched, effectively doubling their impact. Combined with contributions from more than 50 sponsors, in-kind donations, and pre-event fundraising, the gala significantly exceeded its goals.
The sold-out event brought together more than 800 changemakers and supporters committed to advancing National University. At the center of the evening was the announcement of the ANDers™ Campaign, a major initiative designed to expand access to high-quality, market-relevant programs for the university’s students – now respectfully known as “ANDers™.”
“ANDers embody hard work and resilience,” Dr. Mark D. Milliron, President and CEO of National University shared with GB Magazine. “They are students AND parents, students AND employees, students AND military-affiliated. Their challenges extend far beyond the classroom – yet they rise, thrive, and move forward every day.”
The ANDers Campaign supports students through scholarships, emergency aid, policy advocacy, and innovative research that advances best practices supporting student success. NU named two distinguished campaign co-chairs to lead the initiative: Maria Anguiano, entrepreneur in residence at the College Futures Foundation and vice chair of the University of California Regents, and Garry Ridge, chairman emeritus of the WD-40 Company and founder of The Learning Moment.
The evening highlighted the impact of contributions supporting ANDers and their potential to positively influence society. This commitment was further emphasized through the presentation of the prestigious NU 2025 Humanitarians of the Year award. The award is presented to individuals whose creativity, leadership, and vision have led to extraordinary contributions to their communities, enhanced the well-being of others, and advanced progress in society.
This year, National University honored Jeanne McAlister, founder of the McAlister Institute, who for more than 40 years has been a beacon of hope for individuals in recovery from addiction in the San Diego region. Community leader and former Chargers football great Rolf Benirschke, along with his wife Mary, also received the award for their significant contributions to the San Diego community. Past recipients have included T. Denny Sanford, Malin Burnham, the late Conrad Prebys, and Lee and Mary Rice.
The National University Foundation’s mission is to cultivate partnerships, secure resources, and engage donors, alumni, and supporters to advance National University and its affiliates in achieving their vital work – delivering accessible, world-class student experiences.
