National Disability Awareness Month

Shining a Spotlight on Inclusion, Expression, and Community Through Art

March marks National Disability Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the talents, achievements, and important contributions of people with disabilities. Since its official proclamation in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, this month has encouraged communities across the nation to uplift disability inclusion and reflect on the progress still needed to ensure equal opportunity for all.

National Disability Awareness Month is a meaningful opportunity to recognize the abilities, achievements, and contributions of people with disabilities. The Art for All program at The Arc of San Diego reflects this commitment by providing accessible, inclusive art experiences that empower individuals to explore their talents. Art for All brings the power of creativity directly to the hands of individuals with disabilities and celebrates their voices through artistic expression.

Several times a week, clients of The Arc of San Diego gather for hands-on art classes. Classes are taught by Bryttney-Mischele Salvant, a talented local artist with over 15 years of experience. From self-portraits and vibrant collages to crocheting and other artistic mediums, each session offers something new to learn, explore, and enjoy.

The impact of these classes goes far beyond learning technique. Art for All helps participants build confidence, strengthen communication and fine motor skills, and discover new ways of expressing themselves. It also opens doors to community engagement. As Arc client Robert shared with GB Magazine, “Sometimes I come and I am in a bad mood. My art class makes me feel good! Makes me feel like I am a professional artist. It is beautiful.” His words reflect the transformative power of creativity and the sense of belonging these classes cultivate.

“Art for All embodies our belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to be seen, heard, and celebrated,” added Jennifer Bates Navarra, Vice President of Marketing and Development at The Arc of San Diego. “The artwork created in this program reflects both the abilities of our clients and the power of true inclusion.”

As the largest, most comprehensive provider of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in San Diego County, The Arc of San Diego is committed to helping people live independent and fulfilling lives of inclusion. This mission is made possible through generous support of the local community. Art for All ensures that individuals with disabilities have the chance to discover their interests and potential.

The ARC is deeply grateful to the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities for their generous grant supporting the program. Their investment allows the expansion meaningful opportunities and enhances the lives of those served. The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities is dedicated to fostering inclusion, creativity, and innovation by funding local nonprofits that support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across San Diego and Imperial Counties. Their commitment to empowering communities and uplifting individuals makes a lasting impact.

During National Disability Awareness Month, join as we celebrate creativity, inclusion, and the vibrant talents of the people served by The ARC. Together, we are building a community where everyone belongs.
