Liver Excellence Gala Is Approaching

Get ready for an unforgettable evening to honor those making a difference in the liver community. Patients, physicians, and advocates will come together at El Cortez on October 20, 2024 for the Liver Excellence Gala. Longtime supporter and renowned past Flavors Chef Jeffrey Strauss from Pamplemousses Grille, will cater the event and create an extraordinary culinary experience!

Four awards honoring excellence will be presented. The Physician of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding clinician and leader in the field of liver disease. The honoree is Gabriel Schnickel, MD, a board-certified surgeon specializing in liver and kidney transplantation. Dr. Schnickel has served as the Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation at UC San Diego’s Division of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery since 2017.

The Innovation Award recognizes innovation in the life sciences sector for treatment advances of liver disease. This award will be presented to Gilead Sciences for their commitment to drive life-changing science and create healthier futures for people living with liver disease. Their investment in key liver disease indications speaks to Gilead Science’s dedication to deliver novel medicines to populations with high unmet medical need.

The Christie Media Award recognizes outstanding journalism that promotes liver health, raises awareness of key issues, and educates about liver diseases. In honor of their vision ‘Physicians United for a Healthy San Diego,’ this year’s award will be presented to San Diego Physician, official publication of San Diego County Medical Society.

The final award will be the Dr. Anders Nyberg Volunteer of the Year Award. This award was created to recognize those who embody the values of compassion and dedication of service to the liver community. The award will be presented to Richard Jaenisch. At age 12, Rick was diagnosed with hepatitis C, a result of vertical transmission from his mother at birth. Rick has channeled his lived experience into advocacy, writing articles for numerous outlets, serving as a peer counselor, meeting with legislators, speaking at events, and raising funds through the local liver walk.

Mark your calendars, spread the word, and prepare for an evening of elegance, inspiration, and delectable delights. All in support of the Liver Coalition of San Diego’s mission: to save lives by improving liver health and preventing liver disease through community-based education, linkages to care, advocacy, and research programs. See you there!
