Legends Among Us

Some dreams wait years for their moment.

Mitch has always wanted to be a comedian. With a gift for impressions and a natural ability to make people laugh, he long imagined himself on stage. His first public performance came during a talent show, where he stepped bravely into the spotlight and introduced a cast of characters that had lived in his imagination for years. When Home of Guiding Hands hosted a comedy show, there was no question who should open the evening. Mitch took the stage with impressions of Donald Duck, Fred Flintstone, and Cookie Monster. Laughter filled the room. At the end of his set, he received a standing ovation.

Standing just offstage was Derek, one of Mitch’s support staff. Derek quietly offered steady encouragement throughout the performance. He remained nearby from beginning to end, ensuring Mitch felt confident and supported in his moment.

For nearly six decades, Home of Guiding Hands has supported individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living full, self-directed lives. Mitch has been part of the organization’s residential program for more than ten years, where staff work alongside clients not only to meet daily needs but to help bring long-held goals into reach.

Legends are not always celebrities or headline acts. Often, they are found in everyday milestones and quiet leadership.

Beth embodies that spirit.

As a leader in the Client Social Club, Beth has helped transform how social activities are planned and experienced. Too often, individuals with disabilities are told which events they will attend, with little input of their own. The Client Social Club changed that approach entirely. Members choose the events, organize them, set up, host, and clean up together.

Beth attends every meeting and serves as the club’s fundraiser. Her leadership has strengthened not only the club’s financial footing, but also the confidence and independence of its members.

Sometimes, legendary moments begin even earlier in life.

Gummi is just two years old and one of Home of Guiding Hands’ youngest clients. Through early intervention services, her family was connected to monthly Saturday playgroups created after staff recognized a need for deeper connection among families. The playgroup room is filled with sensory toys that help children develop fine motor and social skills. Parents share resources, build friendships, and find comfort in knowing they are not navigating their journey alone. What began as a simple idea has grown into a meaningful support system grounded in understanding and care.

The upcoming Home of Guiding Hands Gala is a celebration of stories like Mitch’s, Beth’s, and Gummi’s. It is a chance to recognize the staff whose dedication makes these moments possible and the clients whose determination and joy inspire everyone around them.

We invite you to join in celebrating the legends among us, the staff and individuals whose creativity and dedication define Home of Guiding Hands. Legends Among Us: Rockin’ for a Cause takes place Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego.

This electric evening will bring together music, connection, and community in support of programs that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full lives. Learn more and reserve your seat at www.hghgala.org.
