La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) has officially announced its milestone 40th-anniversary season of SummerFest, set to transform The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center into a hub of world-class chamber music from July 31 to August 29, 2026. Under the visionary leadership of Music Director Inon Barnatan, this year’s festival adopts the evocative theme “Making History.” The programming is designed to honor the festival’s rich four-decade legacy while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of the genre with contemporary masterpieces.

The 2026 festival promises an expansive lineup featuring more than 80 world-renowned artists. Key highlights include the return of beloved festival veterans alongside the debut of rising stars, ensuring a dynamic blend of technical mastery and fresh interpretation. Barnatan’s curation focuses on the “historical” aspect by juxtaposing foundational works by composers like Beethoven and Brahms with premieres that represent the future of chamber music. This approach highlights how past traditions inform modern creativity, providing audiences with a narrative arc that spans centuries.

A key part of the 40th anniversary is the Synergy Initiative, which fosters interdisciplinary collaborations. These performances emphasize LJMS’ commitment to innovation. Additionally, the festival remains dedicated to its educational mission, offering more than 50 free events including Artist Lounges, Coaching Workshops, and Open Rehearsals throughout the month. These events allow the San Diego community to witness the rigorous artistic process behind the polished performances seen on The Baker-Baum Concert Hall stage.

As LJMS celebrates forty years of excellence, SummerFest 2026 stands as a testament to the enduring power of live performance. By blending a reverence for the past with a bold look toward the future, the festival solidifies its reputation as one of the premier summer chamber music destinations in the United States.
