Karla Torosian: Redefining Nonprofit Recruitment Through Community

Cultivating a Community-Driven Approach to Nonprofit Leadership

Karla Torosian is not your typical recruiter. As the CEO of Redbone Recruiting, she has managed to turn the traditional headhunting model on its ear. Instead of relying solely on resumes and job boards, Karla builds deep connections within the San Diego community to find the perfect fit for non-profit organizations. She maintains that it is all about people, not just positions.

“Many of my candidates come from networking and building trust,” Karla explains. “Being an active part of the community enables me to understand people’s unique abilities and what missions resonate with them.” By immersing herself in the local scene, she gets a firsthand look at people’s passions and skills, making it easier to match them with organizations that share their values.

Redbone Recruiting is not just about filling a vacancy; it is about making a difference. Karla’s personal experience with non-profit services fuels her drive to help these organizations thrive. “Although their mission does not change, the way to approach it is always changing,” she notes. “It is crucial to find talent that is diverse and adaptable to the evolving needs of the non-profit sector.”

Redbone’s work with the Chicano Federation is a perfect example of this approach. By truly understanding the organization’s culture and mission, Karla was able to find a candidate who was not only qualified but also deeply passionate about the cause.

So, what exactly is the secret to finding great talent when budgets are tight? Karla suggests thinking outside the box when it comes to conversations around compensation.

“Think about compensation as a complete work-life-package,” she advises. “Highlight your work schedule flexibility, remote opportunities, and robust benefit packages. People want to be part of something uplifting and supportive. Talk about your culture and how you celebrate wins.”

Being a Hispanic, LGBTQ+ woman leading a minority-owned business has not been without its challenges. But Karla’s determination and proven track record are helping to break down barriers every day. “My biggest challenge is perception or assumptions about capability,” she admits. “The only way to counter that is to point to my body of work and rely on the reputation I have developed.”

Karla’s story is a powerful example of how community, diversity, and social impact can drive innovation. Her deep-rooted passion for people combined with her extensive non-profit experience has led to a groundbreaking recruitment model. Whether you are a non-profit striving to make a greater impact or a driven professional seeking a fulfilling career, Redbone Recruiting is dedicated to connecting you with opportunities that align with your values and aspirations.
