Igniting Possibilities for 50 Years

Since its opening in 1976, Girl Scouts San Diego’s Camp Winacka has helped generations of campers across San Diego and Imperial Counties build confidence, friendships, and a lifelong connection to the outdoors. As the organization marks Winacka’s 50th anniversary, it celebrates the moments that shape girls into leaders: first-time adventures, brave new steps, and the sense of belonging that only camp can create.

“I made a friend at camp. It is really meaningful because I was worried that I would not make friends,” said Siena, a camper in fifth grade.

Girl Scout Camp is more than a destination; it is where girls discover who they are and what they can do. In this supportive space, girls can be themselves, explore new skills, build friendships, and connect with caring mentors. These types of outdoor adventures are proven to build independence, confidence, and well-being while offering a healthy break from technology and social pressures.

“My favorite memory was sleeping under the stars and the beautiful night sky. This was my first time sleeping outside,” shared Jasmine, a first-time camper.

Whether they are tackling the ropes course, hiking scenic trails, or roasting s’mores next to new friends, each camper creates their own leadership story, and every camper belongs.

Celebrating Winacka at Urban Campout
At its annual Urban Campout fundraiser on Friday, September 18, 2026, Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD) – alongside Celebratory Chair, Kristi Pieper, the local Girl Scout who co-named Camp Winacka in 1976 – will welcome 400 guests to commemorate 50 years of camp and everything it makes possible in the life of a girl.

Attendees are invited to explore GSSD’s Balboa Campus for an evening of outdoor fun and camaraderie while connecting with the Girl Scout mission and raising critical dollars for camp programs.

Girl Scouts San Diego ensures every girl can lead, explore, and belong – regardless of financial circumstances. By removing barriers to access, GSSD provides opportunities for girls to find their inner confidence, grow their courage, and build their character at camp. This life-changing impact is what Girl Scouting makes possible.

Fifty years ago, a spark was lit at Camp Winacka. Today, that fire continues with each new camper catching the confidence to try, grow, lead, and belong.

Save the date for Urban Campout on Friday, September 18, and help ignite the possibilities for future generations.
