Home Start Gala Brings Hope and Stability to Families in Need

For much of her life, stability felt like an impossible dream. Growing up without a steady mother or father, Aire often felt caught between uncertainty and survival. Her father struggled with addiction, while her mother worked tirelessly to provide – leaving little time for connection or guidance. “It was just me and my sister,” she shared with GB Magazine, “and she did her best to raise me, but a child raising a child does not always work.”

While she longed for love and a sense of home, frequent moves across multiple states made it hard to feel settled anywhere. Each new place brought another round of goodbyes, and another reminder that safety and consistency were out of reach.

That all began to change when Aire found Home Start. For the first time, she discovered a safe, stable place to call home – and a community that surrounded her with genuine care and encouragement. “If I had not found Home Start,” she says, “I do not know where I would be right now.”

Today, her life looks completely different. She has a stable home and is pursuing her dream of becoming a medical assistant. More than that, she wakes up each morning without fear of having to leave, supported by a network of women who check in, care deeply, and believe in her potential. “It is a really great feeling that Home Start has given me, without even knowing they gave it to me,” she says with gratitude.

Her joy now shines brightest when she talks about her future – and her daughter. She is determined to provide the kind of love, stability, and support she never had growing up. “I am excited to give her the love I was never shown, and a stable home I never had,” she added. “Thanks to Home Start, she is going to have the life I always wanted – the life I always deserved.”

You can be part of helping more families like this by attending Home Start’s Blue Ribbon Gala on Saturday April 25th at The US Grant, in downtown San Diego. Break out the nostalgia and get ready to rewind with this year’s unforgettable theme: Rhythm of the 90s. This is San Diego’s premier fundraiser for child abuse prevention.

The evening will feature a delicious three-course dinner, an exciting silent auction, live entertainment, dancing that will have you saying: “This is how we do it,” and – most importantly – moving stories from clients whose lives have been transformed through Home Start’s programs.

While celebrating with a little 90s flair, Home Start’s mission will remain timeless. All proceeds raised that evening will help ensure vulnerable children and families in our community have the safety, stability, and support they deserve.

Create the rhythm that helps families grow, heal, and thrive. Join Home Start for a night that promises heart, hope, and just the right amount of 90s fun.
