Championing Disability: 56 Years Strong

Home of Guiding Hands, a non-profit based in San Diego County, was established in 1961 by a group of businessmen seeking better care for their loved ones with disabilities. At that time, children with disabilities were often sent to institutional facilities.

In 1967, the organization created a campus in East County, featuring homes, medical facilities, a garden, pool, chapel, park, recreation areas and classrooms. Clients thrived in this community, gaining life skills and growing in a supportive environment. One Direct Support Professional, Teresa, recalled a client who overcame her fear of water through consistent support, eventually learning to float.

Another client, initially resistant to attending day programs, found joy and purpose in tending the community garden, eventually securing a job cleaning parks in East County. These opportunities allowed clients to achieve beyond their expectations and realize that the possibilities for their future are endless.

In the early 2000s, Home of Guiding Hands transitioned 150 residents to small group homes across San Diego neighborhoods, promoting community engagement. Today, the organization operates over 27 residential homes, with some original campus clients still part of the program.

The organization prides itself on exceeding the minimum licensing requirements, taking residents on community outings throughout the week and organizing trips to Disneyland, SeaWorld, Knotts Berry Farm, Las Vegas and local attractions. The staff at Home of Guiding Hands truly feel that their clients are family, and want them to have as much fun, and experiences in the community, as any other individual.

Home of Guiding Hands recently founded the Client Social Club, which organizes events based on client interests, such as the Monster Mash, The Laugh Love & Brunch Ball and the upcoming Talent Show in August. The clients and staff collaborate to plan the details of each event, down to food and decorations. These events empower clients, affirming that their opinions and voices matter and they can impact their community.

Clients also support the organization’s fundraising events, including the annual Charity Golf Classic Tournament. This year marks the 42nd golf event, held at the Singing Hills Golf Club at Sycuan on Friday, October 11th. The event features breakfast, promo gifts, a putting contest, unlimited beverages, food stations and more. Clients line up to high-five golfers before they head onto the course, knowing participants care about their well-being.

Last year, over 130 attendees attended the event, and we hope to make it even more successful this year. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, or learning more about the Charity Golf Classic, please visit the events portion of their website.

Over the past 56 years, Home of Guiding Hands has expanded its services to include life planning workshops, independent living support, in-home respite care, early childhood education, adult foster homes, transportation and more. The organization serves over 4,600 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities annually in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Home of Guiding Hands remains dedicated to providing exceptional care and opportunities for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they lead fulfilling and empowered lives. Visit www.guidinghands.org to learn more.
