Father Joe’s Villages: 75 Years of Innovation and Compassion in Service

Share

Over its 75-year history, Father Joe’s Villages has been at the forefront of addressing the challenges of homelessness, continually evolving with innovation and compassion. Beginning in 1950, the organization operated as a soup kitchen downtown out of St. Mary of the Wayside Chapel. Under Father Joe Carroll’s visionary leadership, the organization grew towards a model that embraced a holistic and client-centered approach to provide comprehensive pathways to stability.

Now under the leadership of Deacon Jim Vargas, Father Joe’s Villages is strategically confronting the entangled complexities of homelessness by addressing its underlying determinants, including escalating housing costs, substance use disorders, and chronic health conditions. As Father Joe’s Villages celebrates its 75th anniversary, it stands as the most prominent and longest-serving provider of homeless services in our community, earning national recognition as a thought leader.

In 2025, Father Joe’s Villages will complete and continue several transformative projects to address the complex challenges individuals and families experiencing homelessness face. These projects include opening a 248-bed recovery sober shelter and a 44-bed detox facility, as well as launching the operation of 130 shelter beds at the Veterans Village of San Diego.

These and many other initiatives reflect their dedication to prioritizing the needs and voices of our most vulnerable neighbors and how philanthropy makes a positive difference in their lives. Father Joe’s Villages is sincerely grateful for San Diego’s sustained support for the past 75 years and your commitment to helping achieve their future goals.
