Smashing Records Helping Homeless Youth
For each of the past three years Doors of Change (DOC) has set a record for helping homeless youth get off the streets and into safe housing in San Diego – and many youths have become self-sufficient as a result! In 2022 DOC shattered its record for housing homeless youth by 188 youth, resulting in 349 youth being placed in safe housing. Since 2001, DOC has helped over 2,600 homeless youth get safe housing.
Doors of Change is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in San Diego that exclusively helps the most underserved of the entire homeless population, Transitional Age Youth (TAY) ages 17 to 25 — the most likely age group to break the cycle of homelessness.
TAY face a unique set of challenges. Most have come from highly dysfunctional families, often abused or neglected. They may have been ejected from their home after coming out as LGBTQ. They have not been taught how to manage life and have endured emotional trauma at home and on the streets. They are distrustful and lack an understanding of how to move forward.
The key to DOC’s success is its Homeless Youth Advocacy Program, which builds trust very quickly. Without trust, homeless youth will not ask for help. DOC staff is available by phone 24/7. That immediacy, and the empathy shown by staff, builds trust with the youth very quickly. DOC does not judge or have expectations but listens and does a thorough assessment of each youth. Because they feel comfortable, many youth ask for a mental health referral in addition to the other services and referrals available from DOC: housing, medical care, substance abuse treatment, education, employment assistance, ID, and much more. DOC works with dozens of partner agencies to connect youth with the resources they need to become self-sufficient and get off the streets for good.
DOC’s annual Concert of Hope, this year featuring 3-time Grammy winner Ben Harper, will be on Saturday, September 9 at the UCSD Epstein Family Amphitheater. DOC is seeking concert sponsors. Sponsorships include an invitation to the VIP Party, the best concert seats, an opportunity to get a photo with Ben Harper and sponsor logos in print and online media.
Concertgoers will hear the inspiring “Rocky Story” of Justine, a formerly homeless youth who recently graduated from Law School! Sponsoring or attending the concert is a great way to help more youth like Justine build a life they can be proud of.
DOC has secured $50,000 in Matching Funds from the J.D. Bud and Vonda Webb Foundation. Any donation, sponsorship, or ticket purchase will be DOUBLED! Lawn tickets start at only $65. Those who cannot attend the concert but want to help San Diego homeless youth get off the streets can make donations of any amount online.
For sponsorships contact Jeffrey Sitcov, President & Founder at (760) 505-7077.
