Cura Smiles, a nonprofit dental clinic based in City Heights providing free dental care to individuals across San Diego County, was founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to quality oral health care. The story began in 2003, when Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick volunteered at a rural dental clinic in Nicaragua. Inspired by the experience, he returned year after year and helped launch a permanent clinic for coffee-farming communities.
In 2017, Dr. Fitzpatrick brought that mission home, opening Cura Smiles in City Heights. Today, the clinic provides compassionate, comprehensive dental care and education to those who need it most, working to combat the stigma, pain, and systemic health issues tied to poor oral health.
Over the past five years, Cura Smiles has served thousands of patients entirely free of charge, thanks to support from a growing network of donors and volunteers. The clinic focuses on reaching underserved populations, including low-income families, individuals in recovery, and people experiencing homelessness. In 2024, Cura Smiles offered $415,000 worth of services to 247 patients and provided 110 dentures. By restoring oral health, Cura Smiles helps restore confidence, dignity, and overall well-being.
On Friday, September 26, Cura Smiles invites the community to their Sips & Smiles Soirée, a fundraising event dedicated to expanding access to free dental care in San Diego. The event will take place at the beautiful BoujieMana Estate in Point Loma, offering guests a stunning backdrop of harbor views as they support a vital cause.
The evening promises a lively, elegant atmosphere complete with a champagne welcome, curated wine and beer selections, gourmet bites, and a silent auction featuring exclusive items and experiences. Guests will mingle at sunset while enjoying unending views of the city.
“We are truly honored to bring the community together for an evening that celebrates compassion and connection,” Christine Passmore, Executive Director of Cura Smiles shared with GB Magazine. “The need for free dental care has grown significantly in San Diego County, and this event is not only a celebration of what we have accomplished, but a vital step in ensuring we can continue to meet that need. It is going to be a fun, meaningful night that makes a real difference.”
Additionally, Cura Smiles has launched a matching grant campaign in partnership with the David Copley Foundation, running through September 30. The campaign invites individuals, community groups, and corporations to take part. All donations made during this period will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the David Copley Foundation, up to $50,000. While the organization maintains a lean structure, essential expenses such as rent, dental supplies, and staff salaries remain significant.
With demand for services continuing to rise, this upcoming fundraiser and matching grant mark a pivotal moment for the organization. Proceeds will go directly toward expanding services, reaching more individuals without access to dental care, and continuing Cura Smiles’ vision of a healthier community – one smile at a time.
