CREATING LASTING MEMORIES

Share

December is a joyous time for children everywhere. The sparkle in their eyes reflects the holiday lights that brighten the trees and homes. In that instance, one may experience a rush of extraordinary childhood holiday memories where blessed traditions were celebrated surrounded by loved ones.

What many people experienced as children was truly magical. The sad reality is that not everyone treasures such fond memories. Children and families make up over 7% of our population experiencing homelessness. Individuals who experience homelessness as a young person are four times more likely to fall back into homelessness as an adult.

On any given night in San Diego, more than 320 children sleep outside on the streets. There is nothing magical about this time of year for youth experiencing homelessness. For these children, the holiday season only brings greater isolation, but together we can change that.
Father Joe’s Villages gives youth the proper resources and opportunities necessary to break this cruel cycle.

It is important to acknowledge homelessness is merely a chapter in one’s life story. Father Joe’s Villages has a range of services to care for children that help them start a new chapter of hope. The Therapeutic Childcare program is dedicated to preparing children and their families for success by integrating services that address their behavioral, developmental, medical and dental needs all in one location.
The program also hosts many celebrations of joy during the holiday season including a visit from Santa Claus on the Old Town Trolley, ensuring all children have a gift to open this time of year.

So far this year, Therapeutic Childcare has served over 220 children. The program works to improve the lives of children and families experiencing homelessness beyond just one’s academic progress; it prepares them to achieve greatness and strengthen the family unit as a whole.

Therapeutic Childcare program at Father Joe’s Villages provides holistic services but above all, it ensures youth in need are embraced with love and care. We all need community.
Please choose compassion this holiday season. Kindly donate today to give children the gift of stability and joy. To make an impact or learn more, visit my.neighbor.org today.
