In the heart of San Diego, Sitara Sethi, the inspiring CEO of the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), is leading a heartfelt mission to build a community where everyone feels welcomed and supported.
Since taking the helm, Sitara has made it clear that a good community is built on stability and opportunity. One of the first steps she has taken for the community is tackling the challenge of affordable and permanent housing. FDD has invested over $1.5 million since 2018 to create homes that not only shelter but truly nurture independence. A standout example is the recent $500,000 investment in the Vista Lane Family Apartments in partnership with MirKa Investments. This project has created 18 units that are much more than just living spaces – they are a warm invitation for everyone, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to truly feel at home.
But Sitara’s vision is not confined to bricks and mortar. She strongly believes that building an inclusive community means creating opportunities to grow and connect. Over the past six years, FDD has awarded more than $2 million in grants and has worked alongside over 100 local nonprofit organizations, including the Autism Society San Diego and UCSD’s Neurodiversity in Tech program.
These partnerships open real opportunities – from practical job training and career support to creative outlets and community events. Every grant sparks projects that bring fresh ideas to life and helps neighbors connect and grow closer as a community.
Understanding that life can sometimes throw unexpected hurdles, Sitara has also prioritized emergency support. Since 1986, FDD has provided millions in emergency assistance to help families handle unforeseen challenges like sudden medical needs to housing crises. This lifeline ensures that when things get tough, there is always someone ready to lend a helping hand.
Sitara invites the San Diego community to get involved in two key events that celebrate resilience and solidarity. Every year in the Spring, the Grantee Showcase is a vibrant evening celebrating the achievements of FDD’s grant partners. Then, on August 28th at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the Annual Day at the Races will combine fun, philanthropy, and a spirit of giving, raising vital funds for the Emergency Help Fund.
For Sitara Sethi, building an accessible San Diego is a promise of dignity, opportunity, and belonging. Her genuine care for each person’s well-being shines through every program and every partnership. Through her inspiring leadership, FDD continues to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities truly thrive, creating a future where every voice is heard and every heart is embraced.
