Celebrating 50 Years of Advocating for San Ysidro with the Abrazo Run/Walk

This year, Casa Familiar celebrates 50 years of improving lives in the historically disinvested community of San Ysidro with the Abrazo 10k Run/5k Walk on Saturday, May 6, 2023. From its humble beginnings as Trabajadores de la Raza on the front lines of the Chicano movement in the 1970s, Casa Familiar began as a voice for the Spanish-speaking community on mental health and social well-being, providing family counseling and immigration support programs.

Casa Familiar evolved into one of the largest non-profit advocacy and community organizing groups based in the San Diego border region, expanding its programs to enhance the life of low-income individuals and families through advocacy, human services, affordable housing, arts and culture, and community and economic development.

“I cannot think of a better way to honor our 50th anniversary than with the Abrazo Run/Walk through the neighborhoods that Casa has uplifted for over five decades,” said Lisa Cuestas, Casa’s CEO and President. “We will walk and run together along a route that reminds us of our San Ysidro history, before open fields and farms gave way to shopping centers and homes, when Dairy Mart Road actually led to a dairy, when the region was not so polluted and developed,” said Cuestas. “We will remember the many demonstrations that have walked this same route in the struggle for the human rights of immigrants, and we will look ahead as we continue to walk until equity for all is a reality.”
The Abrazo 10K Run/5K Walk will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Register www.casafamiliar.org/abrazo.
