Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Opening Doors for San Diego Youth Since 1941

Share

For 85 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has been a place where young people are welcomed, encouraged, and inspired to see a bigger future for themselves.

Every afternoon across San Diego County, children walk through Club doors carrying backpacks, homework, and sometimes worries they do not know how to explain. Inside, they find something powerful: adults who know their names, friends who cheer them on, and a safe place to learn, create, and grow. For youth in grades K-8, the Club becomes more than an after-school program, it becomes a second home.

Today, many of the families served by the organization face financial hardship or limited access to enrichment opportunities. The Club fills that gap by providing caring mentors, academic support, healthy meals, and hands-on programs that help kids discover their interests and talents. Through programs focused on academic success, strong character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles, members build confidence and resilience that carry into high school and adulthood.

The organization’s roots in San Diego run deep. The William J. Oakes Branch opened in 1941, becoming one of the earliest Boys & Girls Clubs in California. Over the decades, community leaders and local partners expanded access to youth programs across the region. Through a series of mergers, multiple organizations joined together to form the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, uniting resources to serve even more families. That collaborative spirit continues to guide the mission today.

Now operating 22 locations across a 2,000-square-mile service area, BGCGSD reaches youth in urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, and rural areas alike. The organization continues to evolve to meet the needs of a changing world. At the Encanto Branch, the organization is piloting the “Club of the Future,” providing members with access to makerspaces, STEM learning labs, esports, and technology-focused learning, expanding awareness of careers and possibilities beyond their everyday experience.

2025 Impact at a Glance:

  • 22,459 youth served
  • $518,007 in scholarships awarded
  • 422,910 healthy meals and snacks provided
  • 305 military families supported

Community support makes these outcomes possible. Signature fundraising events, including the Borrego Springs Golf Classic, the National City Golf Classic, and An Evening of Changing Lives gala, help fund scholarships and educational programs such as STEM enrichment and Exact Path, a diagnostic learning tool that strengthens reading, math, and language skills.

Scholarships are especially critical because they ensure that no child is turned away due to a family’s financial situation. Every contribution helps provide safe spaces after school, mentors who listen, and opportunities for youth to explore sports, arts, leadership, and academics. For working parents, it brings peace of mind. For children, it opens doors.

Year after year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego continues its mission of Changing Lives, one child, one relationship, and one opportunity at a time.
