Mingei International Museum’s bold new exhibition Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo celebrates the magical transformation of plants into color. The opening was attended by Audrey Ratner, Carl Findley, Jennifer Findley, Robyn Bottomley, Susie Litschke, Maureen King, Jessica Hanson York, Barbara Hanson Forsyth, Emily Hanna, Victoria Hamilton, and Karen Gammiere, who gathered to explore the color of ocean tides, starry dusk skies, and vintage Levi’s. Indigo blue is all around us, yet harnessing this hue is a complex feat of chemistry and botanical transformation. Now open to the public at Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, the exhibition combines art, craft, science, and history to explore indigo’s past and present.
