It is that time of year again – new pencils, fresh notebooks, first-day jitters, and the promise of a clean slate. But for too many kids in our community, back-to-school season is not filled with excitement. It is filled with uncertainty. That is where Lifeline Community Services comes in.
For over 50 years, Lifeline Community Services has been a steady force in San Diego County, supporting over 25,000 youth, adults, and families each year. Lifeline works at the intersection of behavioral health and economic development. Their programs span everything from Youth Development and Behavioral Health to Housing & Self-Sufficiency, Child Abuse Prevention, and Anti-Human Trafficking.
One of their most powerful efforts is their Wellness Back-to-School Backpack Program. This is not just about school supplies. It is about showing up for our kids – in ways that impact their mental health, academic success, and sense of belonging. Having a new backpack reduces stress and anxiety by creating comfort and familiarity, as well as boosting self-esteem with pride in ownership. A child that is hungry and feels unsupported has a hard time learning. These backpacks include snacks and basic necessities that reduce daily stressors.
The backpacks also supply the right tools so that students can fully engage in the classroom. That means higher participation, better grades, and stronger connections with teachers and peers. Many schools team up with Lifeline to make sure students get access to additional mental health resources and behavioral support when they need it most.
