Arc of San Diego How One Partnership is Changing Lives

The Arc of San Diego proudly announces the recipient of its 2025 Community Partnership Award: the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (LFJCC). This honor recognizes LFJCC’s exceptional dedication to inclusive employment and its unwavering support for individuals with disabilities in the workplace.

Through a dynamic and ongoing partnership, LFJCC has created meaningful employment and internship opportunities for clients of The Arc of San Diego. These roles span departments such as guest services and early childhood education, where individuals are welcomed not only as employees but as valued contributors to the community. This inclusive environment has enabled participants to explore their interests, build professional skills, and achieve personal growth.

One inspiring example of this collaboration is the journey of Yesenia. A client of The Arc’s Employment Services program, Yesenia first began her career working in a group setting with a job coach at The Bean coffee shop on the LFJCC’s campus. She then advanced to a paid internship position at LFJCC’s preschool to acquire experience and skills in a childcare setting. Yesenia now thrives in her role working independently as a Healthy Living Assistant.

Yesenia’s daily responsibilities include preparing meals, managing snack schedules, and ordering ingredients for the preschool. Her organizational skills, independence, and dedication have made her an essential part of the team. Her favorite moments are those spent engaging with the children, whether in the classroom or on the playground, where her warmth and enthusiasm shine.

According to Jennifer Meltzer, Program Coordinator at LFJCC, “Yesenia has become an integral part of our team. Her enthusiasm and genuine love for the children are evident in everything she does.” Michaelea Caluza, Yesenia’s job coach, echoes this sentiment, noting, “Yesenia’s positive attitude and infectious smile make her a joy to be around. Her dedication and enthusiasm shine through in everything she does.”

Yesenia’s story exemplifies the transformative power of opportunity and support. Her success reflects the broader impact of inclusive employment and the importance of community partnerships in fostering empowerment and independence.

Anthony J. DeSalis, Esq., President and CEO of The Arc of San Diego, expressed his gratitude, stating, “The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center exemplifies what it means to be a true community partner, and we are deeply grateful for their continued collaboration and dedication to empowering individuals with disabilities.”

The Arc of San Diego is dedicated to building a more inclusive and inspiring San Diego, one opportunity at a time. Thanks to community partnerships, The Arc is able to accomplish their mission of supporting and empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve their life goals.
