An Evening of Laughter with Rita Rudner

If Rita Rudner’s life were a movie, she already has the title ready: “We Can Fix It in the Edit.”

Rita Rudner has built a career on comedy that never goes out of style – smart, witty, sharply observed, and delivered with a light touch that welcomes everyone in the room. Her humor lands across generations because it is rooted in the timeless stuff: relationships, self-image, and the delightful absurdities of being human. On May 16, she brings that signature wit to North Coast Repertory Theatre’s Spotlight Gala, an evening that celebrates the power and joy of theatre while giving audiences a chance to spend time with one of stand-up’s most enduring voices.

Rudner’s path to the microphone began long before Las Vegas marquees and television specials. She moved to New York from Florida at fifteen with dreams of dancing on Broadway, performing in original productions including Follies and Mack and Mabel. It was during her time in Annie that she started slipping into Manhattan comedy clubs, discovering a second stage where her perspective could sparkle. In the early 1980s, she made the leap from chorus lines to punch lines, becoming a familiar presence on Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

She became a headliner in Las Vegas, where she quickly turned into one of the city’s hottest tickets. Over the course of a multi-year run, she sold nearly two million tickets, grossed more than a hundred million dollars, and became the longest-running solo female comedy show in Las Vegas history, earning “Comedian of the Year” honors there nine years in a row.

Despite all her accomplishments, Rudner still sounds like someone who is politely suspicious of hype. When asked what she has learned about staying creatively fresh over decades of performing, she replied: “It should be avoided.”

Her first solo HBO special, Rita Rudner’s One Night Stand, drew award nominations, and later HBO specials – Born to Be Mild and Married Without Children – became ratings standouts. She has filled Carnegie Hall three times and made history again when PBS aired Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas as the network’s first-ever stand-up comedy special. Offstage, she is also an accomplished author, with bestselling nonfiction, novels, and a Grammy-nominated audiobook.

Much of Rudner’s creative life is shared with her husband of thirty years, writer-producer Martin Bergman. Together they have written for film and television, including Oscar broadcasts alongside Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg, and they have collaborated on stage projects as well.

Yet for all her range, Rudner’s compass keeps pointing back to the immediacy of a live audience, “The connection between a live performer and an audience sill excites me as much as it did when I was in my first Broadway production at sixteen, trying to not upset the star, Chita Rivera with my inexperience.”

That love of the room is exactly what makes Rudner such a perfect fit for a gala celebration. “Film and TV are ok,” she says, “but live theatre will always be my first love.”
