A Legacy of Saving Lives San Diego Blood Bank Celebrates 75 Years

For 75 years, San Diego Blood Bank has stood as a pillar of hope, healing, and community partnership. Since 1950, this vital organization has ensured life-saving blood is available to patients when it is needed most. Driven by the generosity of countless blood and financial donors as well as the unwavering support of the community, the Blood Bank has become a cornerstone of public health.

Throughout its history, San Diego Blood Bank has remained committed to innovation and safety. It led the way in California by introducing hepatitis screening in the 1960s and was the first in the nation to collect COVID Convalescent Plasma during the pandemic.

Today, the organization continues to evolve, embracing cutting-edge research and technology to better serve the community. Programs like Precision Blood™ use genetic and molecular testing to improve donor-patient matches and optimize transfusion outcomes. These innovations not only save lives but reflect the forward-thinking spirit that has defined San Diego Blood Bank for decades.

Accessibility and service remain at the heart of the mission. San Diego Blood Bank has expanded opportunities for the community to save more lives. In addition to running 10 bloodmobiles, it added its 10th donor center – Clairemont Mesa Donor Center – in January 2025. Whether through summer blood drives or the campaign to modernize donation vehicles, San Diego Blood Bank works to make blood donation as convenient and impactful as possible.

While blood donations are the lifeblood of the organization, financial contributions are equally critical. Every dollar helps fund vital research, purchase state-of-the-art equipment, and support the infrastructure necessary to process, test, and deliver blood to patients in need. Financial gifts fuel innovation, ensuring that patients receive the safest and most effective treatments. They directly impact local patients – from trauma victims and surgical patients to cancer warriors and premature infants – offering them a second chance at life.

Looking ahead, San Diego Blood Bank envisions a future where innovation and community partnership continue to drive progress. With plans to invest in research and acquire advanced equipment, the organization remains poised to advance medical science, ensuring hope and healing are always within reach.

The mission of San Diego Blood Bank thrives because of the community’s unwavering support. Every donor who has rolled up a sleeve, every volunteer who has offered time, and every financial supporter who has invested in the mission has played a crucial role in sustaining this life-saving work.

Be a part of the next chapter. Your financial support today makes a profound difference. Your gift helps save lives and ensures the most advanced care remains available to our friends, neighbors, and loved ones across San Diego and beyond.
