For Sam and Valinda McGovern, community service is not just an obligation, it is a passion that has shaped their lives and careers. As honorees for the 51st Annual Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) Gala, the McGoverns’ journey with HGH is a testament to the power of dedication, advocacy, and heartfelt generosity.
Sam’s introduction to HGH began after moving to San Diego from West Virginia, where he had served as a police officer before transitioning into law and business. Seeking ways to connect with the community, he joined the Chamber of Commerce and met members of HGH’s leadership team. Their mission resonated deeply with him, particularly after his experiences encountering underserved individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) during his time in law enforcement.
“I saw firsthand how a lack of resources affected people with IDD and their families,” Sam shared with GB Magazine. “HGH was different, it was a place where clients were supported, uplifted, and empowered.”
His commitment quickly turned into action, leading him to serve on committees and later on HGH’s Board of Directors. Valinda, a previous nonprofit director in West Virginia, found herself equally drawn to HGH. Initially introduced to the organization through Sam, she was deeply moved by the warmth of the staff, the enthusiasm of the clients, and the tangible impact of HGH’s work.
Beyond their roles with HGH, the McGoverns are highly involved in initiatives that enhance the quality of life in East County and beyond. Sam serves on the board of the East County Chamber of Commerce and is vice chair of its government affairs committee. He has also been active with the Boys and Girls Club of East County, Crisis House, and the Lakeside Community Planning Group. Their shared passion for animal welfare has also led them to support rescue organizations, particularly those focused on Greyhound adoption.
Their advocacy extends beyond community engagement, it is about ensuring that individuals with IDD receive the recognition and support they deserve. “The government and community need to prioritize disability services at a much higher level,” Sam emphasizes. “Organizations like HGH do life-changing work, but they need stronger backing to continue and expand their impact.”
The McGoverns’ dedication will be celebrated at the 51st Annual Home of Guiding Hands Gala, an evening dedicated to honoring champions of the IDD community while raising crucial funds for the organization’s programs. Guests will enjoy an unforgettable night of fine dining, entertainment, and philanthropy, all in support of HGH’s mission to empower individuals with disabilities.
Sam and Valinda’s hopes for the future are simple yet powerful: to see greater advocacy, funding, and community involvement in IDD services. “The joy and fulfillment that HGH brings to its clients and families is extraordinary,” Valinda shares. “Being part of that story is one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives.”
Join us on this special evening to celebrate the McGoverns’ contributions and support the continued work of Home of Guiding Hands. May 3, 2025 at the Pendry Hotel San Diego will be a special evening to celebrate the McGoverns’ contributions to Home of Guiding Hands and the community.
