“Accept the challenges so that you can feel
the exhilaration of victory.”
– George Patton

Sharp HealthCare’s vision is to become the best place to work, the best place to practice medicine and the best place to receive care. Because Sharp is a not-for-profit organization, philanthropy through Sharp HealthCare Foundation is an essential part of achieving these goals. Lynn Congemi is the Vice-Chair, Sharp HealthCare Foundation Board of Directors as well as a generous supporter.

#1 The daughter of a career Marine Officer, I was born in Bethesda Naval Hospital and attended 10 schools before graduating high school here in San Diego. I always hated moving and leaving my friends, but it taught me that there are wonderful people everywhere.

#2 My father was a loving and caring father who always encouraged me and told me I could do anything I wanted if I was willing to work hard for it. He was a Marine General, killed in Vietnam when I was 17. It was devastating to me, but I have come to realize that I was very fortunate to have a father like him, if only for a short time.

#3 My husband and I love to travel. Currently, we are taking road trips with our pup through the beautiful and majestic Western US.

#4 I would like to go to Egypt, Africa and the Galapagos.

#5 I like to garden. I have a sign in my garden that reads “one is nearer god’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.”

#6 We have a lab named Norma who was bred to be a service dog. When she was released from her advanced training, we were able to adopt her.

#7 I believe that Sharp is one of our community’s greatest assets, providing compassionate care for 1 in 3 San Diegans each year. In a time where so much of health care feels uncertain, Sharp is doubling down on its commitment to the people of San Diego – increasing access, increasing capacity, acquiring advanced technology, and staying up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs.

#8 I have been fortunate in my life, and it gives me joy to give back. Supporting health care means so much to me because Sharp is there for people in their most vulnerable moments.

#9 It is the desire to help more people have access to care, that makes me proud to support Sharp HealthCare.

#10 Through Sharp’s ENVISION campaign, the hospital campus will have enhanced clinical facilities and services, advanced medical and information technology and increased capacity for the growing San Diego community. Every dollar raised through Sharp HealthCare Foundation is a direct investment into building the kind of environment that makes extraordinary care possible.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
