The Kumeyaay Spirit of Giving

The mission of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is to protect Sycuan’s sovereignty and preserve the well-being of their people through self-sufficiency and responsible governance, while having a positive impact on our community. Sycuan is focused on the well-being of not only its Tribal members, but the community as a whole by being a leader with unwavering and steadfast support to the non-profit organizations that make our region a better place.

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation

#1 According to the Kumeyaay origin story, the Kumeyaay people have been here since the beginning of time. It is astonishing to realize that the Kumeyaay people were living and thriving in their traditional territory long before the pyramids in Egypt were built.

#2 San Diego has always been and will always be Sycuan’s home. Sycuan has known tremendous hardship and knows we must all help each other in order for a community to thrive.

#3 Through its award-winning outreach efforts, Sycuan’s goals are to educate, build awareness, advance ideas and highlight the positive impact Sycuan and all Tribes have on the San Diego region and beyond via responsible governance, historical significance, business leadership and community outreach.

#4 In December, Sycuan Casino Resort proudly presented $175,000 to 25 local charities as part of its 15th Annual Holiday Gift Giving Ceremony. Members of the Sycuan Tribal Council and leadership team annually select a difference-making charity in areas ranging from social and health services to arts and the environment.

#5 Sycuan has an unwavering commitment to public safety, on and off the reservation. Sycuan’s Police and Fire Departments and Medical Center serve the entire East County and San Diego communities.

San Diego Padres

#6 Sycuan begins its 28th season as a Padres Sponsor. For more than a quarter-century, Sycuan has set a new standard for community support with its sponsorship of the San Diego Padres.

#7 Sycuan’s initial partnership investment in the San Diego Padres in 1995 was also revolutionary as it was the first Tribal Government sponsorship in Major League Baseball.

#8 The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and Sycuan Casino Resort are the inaugural Founding Partners at San Diego State’s new Snapdragon Stadium.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
