#6 My dog Rusty is a purebred rescue mutt from a very long line of purebred mutts.

#7 Robert (Bob) Finzi know how lucky I am. I had a reasonably successful career, I have travelled extensively, I am comfortable financially, and for an “old man”, I still get around very well. I have great friends and family. I think that everyone in my position has the obligation to give back to the community whether it is through volunteerism or philanthropy. I try to do both.

#8 My good friend became CEO of the SDBB in 2013. He had a vision of using the SDBB as a platform to drive innovation in precision medicine, something I was a big proponent of. Blood banks are in a unique position to play a pivotal role in this emerging field. I joined the Board to help drive that innovation. I have been on the Board ever since. Whether it is reimagining the way that blood banks can improve care and save lives, responding to crises like COVID-19, coming up with inventive initiatives like precision blood, or identifying the role blood banks can play in the new wave of immunotherapies, the SDBB is one of the most innovative blood banks in the country.

#9 To meet the growing needs for blood components, we must raise $300,000 to invest in the Reveos® Automated Blood Processing System. The Reveos is a revolutionary technology that automates the process of separating donated whole blood into its life-saving components: red cells, platelets, and plasma. Instead of multiple manual steps, the Reveos processes four donations at once in a single, streamlined cycle.

#10 As San Diego Blood Bank celebrates 75 years of saving lives across Southern California, we are calling on our philanthropic community to help us achieve our mission and meet the urgent needs of patients who rely on San Diego Blood Bank’s life-saving products.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
