“We are the ones we have been waiting for.”
– June Jordan
The mission of Serving Seniors is to help older adults in poverty, live healthy and fulfilling lives. Serving Seniors help homeless and low-income seniors thrive and remain independent using an innovative model of whole-person, wraparound support. Serving Seniors is the largest provider of meals to older adults in San Diego County. Serving Seniors provides 1.3 million meals at their nine congregate dining sites, as well as through home delivery and to-go meals. Melinda Forstey is the President & CEO, of Serving Seniors San Diego.

#1 Melinda Forstey grew up in Woburn, Massachusetts, about 15 minutes from Boston. My mother is a teacher and embodies the definition of compassion, wisdom, and empathy.
#2 I love hiking, running, traveling, and anything outdoors. I am currently learning Krav Maga. I also love the New York Times puzzles! It is my way to unwind at the end of the day.
#3 For domestic travel, my favorite places to visit are Paso Robles and Big Sur. Internationally, I have been fortunate enough to visit Africa twice, and it holds a dear place in my heart. I would love to go to India some day and it is on my bucket list to do a guided climb in Patagonia.
#4 “The Shawshank Redemption” is my favorite movie. It is a classic about resilience, friendship, and hope, even in dark times.
#5 Book Recommendation: One of my favorites is the memoir “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls.

#6 I have two cats, Jack and Franklin.
#7 Melinda Forstey believe it is each individual’s responsibility to give back in some way if they are able. Whether that is through volunteerism, their career, philanthropy, or taking care of loved ones or friends, I believe it truly does take a village.
#8 My very first job at the age of 14 was as a waitress in a retirement community. I was literally “serving seniors.” Since then, I have always had an affinity for older adults. I spent my career in human services working in mental health with unhoused families, and healthcare before moving to San Diego.
#9 Serving Seniors’ mission deeply resonated with me and came full circle for me. Our mission allows us to meet critical needs by providing meals, housing, and supportive services. But we believe older adults deserve more than survival – they deserve the opportunity to truly thrive. We are grateful to have built such a strong and caring community that makes this possible.
#10 The Sunshine Gala is our single major fundraising event. Proceeds fund our broad range of supportive services for disadvantaged and homeless seniors throughout San Diego County. Thirty percent of all homeless adults in San Diego County are over age 55.
