“Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres”
(“Tell me who you are with, and I will tell you who you are”)
– Karla Torosian’s Mom

Redbone Recruiting specializes in leadership recruitment for nonprofits with a community-driven approach to recruit leaders that are already serving their communities and elevate them to higher impact roles. Redbone Recruiting’s approach to recruitment is not about algorithms. As President and Founder of Redbone Recruiting, Karla Torosian becomes an extension of an organization to truly get an understanding of the community they are serving, the culture within the organization, and a strong understanding of the skills needed to fill the role.

#1 I grew up in Los Angeles. I am half Cuban and half Salvadoran.

#2 Favorite Travel Destination: Anywhere in Europe, but Italy and Paris are always special. I would also like to visit Cuba and Japan. Ultimately, I want to show my son the world. Africa is definitely on that list.

#3 Best way for me to decompress: Simply have a glass of wine by the fireplace while listening to music

#4 Favorite Movie: “The Bird Cage”.

#5 Book Recommendation: One book that still always bleeds into the way I do business is “Good to Great”.

#6 Wyatt our dog (he is a Redbone Hound Dog) was the inspiration for the name of my company. We also have Pepperoni the cat.

#7 My wife of 26 years has made the most profound impact in my life. That said, it has not just been one person. I stand on the shoulders of a community that continues to uplift and support me.

#8 I am a byproduct of the work that is happening in these community spaces. I am a LGBTQ Latina Business owner and a direct result of the hard work being championed by nonprofits. It is because of the dedication to equality and change that I have been able to be uplifted to the place that I am today. I see it as a personal responsibility to help place community leaders in positions of power to continue to create opportunity for EVERYONE.

#9 When my son was born, I was fortunate to be able to stop working and stay home with him. Two years ago, after my son started kindergarten, I felt ready to take on my next chapter. I combined my years of experience as a business owner, years of managing teams, and my 20+ years of involvement with nonprofits and designed a community driven recruiting firm.

#10 The Nonprofit Sector is unique in that it is community focused and mission driven. With a clear understanding of how nonprofits operate, Redbone Recruiting is specifically designed to specialize in Nonprofit Leadership and Executive recruitment to secure the talent needed to achieve a nonprofit’s mission.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
