“A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman.
But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult.”
— Melinda Gates

#1 Jill Weber a Midwestern girl who grew up in Nebraska, Missouri, and Montana. I attended school at the University of Nebraska – Go, Big Red!

#2 Years ago, I achieved a personal milestone by winning the Montana State Championship in the 500-yard freestyle.

#3 My grandmother, Mary Skalak, was an educator, poet, and philanthropist who profoundly shaped who I am. She sparked my love for reading, poetry, and giving back to others. I cherished spending summers with her in rural Nebraska, where her warmth and wisdom left a lasting impression. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska and authored the Cass County History Book, a testament to her dedication to education and community.

#4 Favorite Travel Destination: I love visiting Hawaii!

#5 Jill Weber love swimming, paddleboarding, reading, and spending quality time with my family. I also enjoy baking – even if it does not always turn out perfectly!

#6 We have three dogs – Deuce, Atlas, and Gayle Bear Lewis.

#7 Giving back to the community is important to me because it is how I honor those who have supported me throughout my life – and it is my way of helping build the kind of world I want my children to grow up in: one rooted in compassion, opportunity, and connection.

#8 Through strategic funding, community partnerships, and innovative programming, FDD supports housing, education, employment, and emergency services that enhance quality of life and promote inclusion.

#9 I love my job and the incredible work the Foundation is doing in our community. I first got involved with the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities because I care deeply about creating real opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, one of the most underserved populations in the nation. The Foundation is changing lives through funding programs that promote inclusion, independence, and dignity. Being part of that mission means everything to me.

#10 The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities’ Annual Day at the Races will raise funds for FDD’s Emergency Help Fund. Proceeds provide urgent financial assistance to San Diego Regional Center clients, helping families stay housed, safe, and connected to critical services during times of crisis.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
