10 Things About Jan Greenberg & Freedom Dogs

Share

“I change the world by changing the lives around me, one at a time”

The mission of Freedom Dogs is to speed the recovery and enhance the lives of wounded military heroes through the use of specially trained service dogs. Freedom Dogs is a unique Service Dog program. Freedom Dogs works with their participants for anywhere from 6 months to years. The participants actually learn how to train a dog in different situations and in the process learn how to handle their own situations. The participants become family for life. Jan Greenberg is a Dog Training Instructor and Partner Program Instructor for Freedom Dogs.

#1 Jan Greenberg grew up in North Shore Chicago. I went to College at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where I got a degree in psychology. Colorado won me over and I stayed there a total of 18 years, until moving to the San Diego.

#2 I taught skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park when I was in college (which should have been my major).

#3 The Rocky Mountains still hold a magical allure for me. Little compares to the beauty of snow-covered mountains and the crisp clean air.

#4 Having traveled a fair amount, I have a strong desire to go somewhere I can see the Aurora Borealis.

#5 I would love to take a long road trip in an RV, where the journey becomes as fascinating as the destination.

#6 Dogs are my passion, and I suppose my hobby as well. I also love paddle boarding which I started as it is something I can do with my dog.

#7 My service dog Bodhi has also shared his heart with Freedom Dogs for over a year working with the Marines and Veterans.

#8 My aunt, Arlene, who just turned 94, has shown me that the best way to go through life’s twists and turns is with grace and a positive attitude. I will always be grateful to her. My love for her has no limits.

#9 I have lived a fortunate life. Many others have not. If I can help or make a difference, even for a little while, that is what I want to do.

#10 Jan Greenberg got involved with Freedom Dogs through a friend who is one of their dog trainers. She told me that Freedom Dogs trains dogs in a totally different, positive way and that I should check it out. I started at Freedom Dogs about 16 years ago with my dog Nadador. At the time, the trainers worked only with the dogs, not the Marines. That soon changed and we began working with the Marines and veterans. When I witnessed what the dogs do for these men and women (who become like family), I was hooked!

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
