“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) educates and empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. For over 55 years, SMSC has run quality programs that support individuals experiencing a range of intellectual and developmental disabilities through their life. De Anna Dougherty has been on the SMSC Board of Directors since 2011 and the Chair of their Haute with Heart Fashion Show since 2014.

#1 I was born and raised in Ridgecrest/China Lake, California. When I was in high school, my family moved to Huntsville, Alabama. It was a bit of a culture shock, but I grew to love the South.

#2 I am an artist. My first degree was in Graphic Design and Illustration from Auburn University. I worked for a full-service advertising agency as the Art Director. I even won an Addy Award for a poster I designed for the Panoply Art Festival in Huntsville, Alabama.

#3 Our family has a Corn Snake named Medusa. She is low maintenance and I do not have to vacuum up fur or find a pet sitter when we travel.

#4 I highly recommend “The Kingkiller Chronicle”. The first and second books are riveting and spellbinding. Unfortunately, I have been waiting for the 3rd book to come out for the past 11 years. If anyone knows the author Patrick Rothfuss, can you give him a little push?

#5 I have checked many items off my bucket list, including skydiving (twice!).

#6 My husband has impacted me more than anyone else. He is a model of kindness, trust, patience and generosity. I feel loved and adored every day, even when I am not at my best.

#7 As much as our communities need support, I think the individual who gives back actually benefits the most.

#8 When my children were very young, they took swimming lessons at SMSC. The swim coaches at SMSC were the best! I was quickly impressed by SMSC’s garden, and later learned about their amazing art program.

#9 I work for Kaiser Permanente and they encourage their employees and physicians to volunteer. I had the good fortune to be invited onto SMSC’s Board of Directors in 2011. After my first term on the Board, SMSC asked me to be the chair for Haute with Heart.

#10 The Haute with Heart Fashion Show will benefit all the programs offered to SMSC’s over 400 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our innovative programs provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
