#1 Dale Yahnke was born and raised in San Diego. My dad was my idol. He grew up during the Great Depression and was a veteran of WWII. He shared his love of sports with me, and we spent many hours together on the basketball court and baseball diamond. He gave me the gift of unconditional love.

#2 I have a significant baseball card collection and would like to go to Cooperstown to see the Baseball Hall of Fame.

#3 I love all sports. I am too old to play basketball and squash so pickleball and ping pong are my sports hobbies. I also enjoy gardening.

#4 Favorite Vacation Spot: Maui is our happy place.

#5 Favorite Movies: “Gladiator” and “Hoosiers”.

#6 We have a doodle named Toby.

#7 My dad is the one who taught me how important it is to give back to your community. He was the perfect role model for that. Bill Walton was another person that was bigger than life that always put others ahead of himself. He was another excellent role model and inspiration for me.

#8 My wife Julie and I are donors and supporters of the Lucky Duck Foundation, and we are firm believers in their mission statement.

#9 Dale Yahnke heard a lot about the Lucky Duck Foundation, and I knew of the founders by reputation. They were all business leaders and great civic leaders as well. I met Drew Moser, who runs the foundation and was impressed with their vision and hands-on approach to making the homeless situation better and improving the lives of so many people in need.

#10 I love the Lucky Duck Foundation and the impact they have already had on our community.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
