Las Patronas Keeping the Music Playing for 80 Years

Share

As one of San Diego’s longest-running charities, Las Patronas has spent 80 remarkable years proving that the song of philanthropy never has to fade. This extraordinary all-volunteer organization has raised over $28 million to fund critically needed capital items for more than a thousand charitable institutions, and its secret to longevity is as timeless as the music it champions: dedicated service and deep, enduring community roots.

Las Patronas thrives on legacy and is focused on embracing the future. The dedicated group includes many second- and third-generation members who proudly carry forward the work begun by their mothers and grandmothers, a testament to the organization’s power to inspire across generations. Members serve six-year terms, forging an unbroken chain of sisterhood, leadership, and mutual support that grows stronger with every passing year.

What truly sets Las Patronas apart is its rigorous, best-in-class approach to grant selection. Members personally visit and thoroughly vet every organization they support. With a sharp focus on capital items, Las Patronas steps in precisely when other funding falls short. A new commercial refrigerator, van, printer, or medical device or even a boat (for San Diego Lifeguards) can transform a nonprofit’s reach overnight, positively impacting the lives of hundreds or even thousands of San Diegans.

At the heart of it all is the annual Jewel Ball, a beloved social and philanthropic tradition that crowns the organization’s year-long fundraising efforts. Members pour months of passion into crafting spectacular, theme-inspired decor, with deep bonds of sisterhood formed in every creative endeavor. A dedicated network of former members stands ready to inspire and support, ensuring each Ball shines brighter than the last.

Looking ahead, Las Patronas is more energized than ever. New partnerships with local businesses, deepening relationships with fellow nonprofits, and a growing digital presence are amplifying its mission and carrying it boldly into the future. Las Patronas warmly welcomes new members, inviting them to help write the next thrilling chapter of this extraordinary story.

The 80th anniversary calls for a celebration as grand as the legacy it honors. Las Patronas will mark the occasion with the 2026 Jewel Ball, themed “Festa di Venezia, THE 80th” on Saturday, August 8, 2026. In partnership with the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, this magical evening will sweep guests into a breathtaking Venetian dream, complete with decor inspired by St. Mark’s Square, ornate chandeliers, Venetian masks, and gondola-themed elements. Under the inspired leadership of Jenny McGowan, it promises to be an unforgettable night of romance, mystery, and celebration.

Adding to the excitement, the evening will feature a spectacular silent auction showcasing seven extraordinary items, including a Picasso lithograph, a golf cart, a stunning sapphire ring, and more!

Tickets for the 80th Jewel Ball are on sale at www.laspatronas.org. Proceeds will fund critical capital grants for San Diego nonprofits, continuing a philanthropic legacy nearly 80 years in the making. Join Las Patronas in celebrating 80 years of changing lives, one grant at a time!
