Promises2Kids Camp Connect Brings Foster Siblings Together

One of the many meaningful ways Promises2Kids carries out its mission of creating a brighter future for foster children in San Diego, is through reuniting brothers and sisters who have been separated in foster care and are living apart. Their Camp Connect program was designed with an annual overnight summer camp as a cornerstone but expanded to offer frequent day activities so siblings can reunite and reconnect all throughout the year.

Camp Connect Field Day brought brothers and sisters together for a full day of games, teamwork, and time to simply be kids. From sunny parachute games and team relay races to flying kites and a final tug-of-war showdown, the field was filled with energy and smiles.

More than anything, the day created space to reconnect, support one another, and build memories that will last long after the games end.

Siblings spent the afternoon playing games, cheering each other on, and enjoying the sunshine along Mission Bay.

Later in the day, while some youth relaxed on the grass between activities, Diego (12) and his younger brother Luca (9) decided to create their own challenges setting up an impromptu workout.

Soon they were standing back-to-back against a tree, lowering into wall-sits as they tried to outlast one another. “Don’t quit!” Lucas shouted. “I am not quitting – you are!” Diego shouted back.

A small crowd quickly gathered around them. Volunteers and youth counted down the seconds as the brothers pushed through the challenge, determined not to be the first to stand up. When they finally dropped, both burst into laughter, shaking out their legs.

What started as a spontaneously playful competition quickly became a moment of connection – two brothers encouraging each other and sharing a moment they rarely have – due to living in different homes – of friendly competition where both can be winners.

Camp Connect was created for moments just like this; siblings laughing, playing, and strengthening a vital connection. Thanks to the generosity of our community, siblings like Diego and Luca can continue making memories and spending meaningful time together, month after month. To donate, volunteer, or for more ways to get involved, visit www.Promises2Kids.org.
