The Legal Aid Society of San Diego is proud to announce that Lorena Slomanson, Esq., has been named recipient of the 2025 Roberto Alvarez Award by the American Constitution Society (ACS). The prestigious award recognizes her tireless dedication to promoting equality, justice, and the rule of law, as well as her steadfast support of ACS both locally and nationally.

As Outreach and Community Relations Manager at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Slomanson has spearheaded numerous initiatives that promote access to justice and extend vital legal services to underserved populations. Her passion for advocacy and dedication to public service exemplifies the core values of ACS and the transformative impact of legal professionals in the community.

Slomanson currently serves as President of the San Diego County Public Law Library Board of Trustees and member of the board of 211 San Diego. She previously served on the State Bar’s Commission on Access to Justice and the City of San Diego Human Rights Commission. She is a past president of the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association and served as vice president of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law Alumni Association.

The ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter’s annual award is named in honor of Roberto Alvarez, the lead plaintiff in the first successful school desegregation court decision in the history of the United States, known as The Lemon Grove Incident. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to social justice.

“Lorena is a highly respected leader in our legal community and is known for her unwavering commitment to breaking down barriers and expanding access for underserved populations,” said Michelle A. Camacho, Esq. “Lorena not only embodies the values of ACS: to support and advocate for laws and legal systems that advance equity and justice for all, but also the transformative power of public service through advocacy and community engagement.”

“I am honored to receive this award,” Slomanson shared with GB Magazine. “It is a privilege to empower people with understanding their legal rights and how to effectively use them. My commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need has always motivated me.”

ACS also presented the Howard Wayne Award to USD Law School Dean Robert Schapiro. The award is named for a founding member of the ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter and a long-time ACS leader who mentored countless new lawyers and law students.
