Before coming to the Legal Aid Society of San Diego (LASSD), Eli, an elderly man with multiple mental and physical disabilities, felt overwhelmed by life’s challenges. “I was totally out of my depth, beside myself unable to cope with housing issues. Access to healthcare was very often denied or made impossible,” Eli shared with GB Magazine. After seeking help from multiple agencies without success, Eli was at his breaking point.
With nowhere else to turn, he reached out to LASSD, hoping to secure reliable housing, navigate the complex healthcare system, and rebuild his life. “I wanted to stabilize, live independently, and become an effective member of society,” he explained.
LASSD began working with Eli immediately, helping him with the difficult process of completing his Section 8 rental assistance recertification, which had become a barrier due to his health challenges. LASSD secured the needed documentation and even helped cover the cost of his service dog Mario’s vaccination using emergency funds, ensuring compliance with his lease.
However, shortly after submitting his recertification, Eli faced a new challenge: a sudden increase in his rent for reasons that were never explained to him. “This uncertainty made everything worse for me,” Eli said. LASSD acted quickly, connecting him to its Housing Team, who uncovered the problem. The property he was renting had been sold, and the new owner had not updated the housing authority. Because the housing authority did not have the information needed to issue the rental assistance payment, the landlord was overcharging Eli. LASSD worked tirelessly to resolve the issue, ensuring payments were reinstated.
In addition to housing support, LASSD connected Eli to Enhanced Care Management to streamline his medical and health-related services. Eli now has a comprehensive care plan and better access to healthcare, including medical, dental, and food assistance.
As he reflects on his journey, Eli says, “I feel human again.” He credits LASSD with helping him regain stability and independence, and he is now eager to advocate for others in need of assistance. “LASSD has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,” he said, his gratitude evident.
Thanks to the LASSD’s donors and supporters, Eli’s life is on a positive path, and he is more hopeful for the future.
