10 Things About Robert and Stephanie Horsman & The Academy of Our Lady of Peace

“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” Walt Disney

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) celebrates a rich history of empowering young women to become Catholic leaders in their local community and in the world. Guided by Gospel values and the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, faculty and staff inspire young women to be leaders who impact global change by building community through a conscious love of God and love of our dear neighbors without distinction.

As a woman of faith, woman of heart, woman of courage and woman of excellence, an OLP student is provided opportunities to put her faith into action, and become a transformative agent of change in our world. Robert and Stephanie Horsman have been active community volunteers for many years and will be the Honorary Committee Co-chairs for OLP’s upcoming Golf Tournament.

Robert and Stephanie Horsman

#1 I am a San Diego native and Robert grew up in Lubbock, Texas.

#2 It is hard to imagine living anywhere else, but we do like Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is rich in the arts, the food is phenomenal and the natural beauty is extraordinary.

#3 We do not necessarily have resolutions for 2022 but we do have goals: to keep our family healthy and whole, to live faith-centered lives, to help those in need and to have a positive impact in our community.

#4 Our good friend, San Diego Patriarch Malin Burnham has coined the phrase, “community before self.” This is something that we take to heart and embrace in how we live our lives and how we have raised our children.

#5 We try to never take for granted the beauty of God’s world and the people we love.

Shih Tzus named Rosie and Teddy Roosevelt

#6 We have two Shih Tzu’s named Rosie and Teddy Roosevelt. Our dogs are a big part of our family, and we love taking family walks with them.

#7 OLP is committed to research-based practices, which foster intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning through an interdisciplinary lens, in order to form collaborative learners, visionaries and innovators.

#8 Looking toward preparing students for the future, critical thinking skills are woven across OLP’s curriculum, leveraging technology as a tool to facilitate student learning in an ever-changing world.

#9 An OLP student is encouraged to explore her passions within academic, athletic, co-curricular and spiritual activities, and develop a mindset ready to take risks and to strive for excellence.

#10 Our daughter, Sophia, entered the Academy of Our Lady of Peace as a freshman this year. We feel very blessed to have found such a wonderful school for our daughter, so it was a natural fit to step up to help OLP with its fundraising endeavors.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
