“Be kind”

The goal of the San Diego Police Foundation is simple, yet essential: to create a safer San Diego. That means safety for ALL who live, work, and play in San Diego. Funded by community contributions since its founding in 1998, the Police Foundation funds crucial equipment, specialized training, and outreach programs vital to creating safer communities. Christina Karl is a San Diego Police Foundation Council member, Silver Soiree sponsor, and Women in Blue champion.

#1 I grew up in Buffalo, New York and moved to La Jolla almost 7 years ago with my husband and 2 children. The weather in California is definitely better!!

#2 My father has had a huge impact on my life. I look to him for his guidance and his words of wisdom. My father has always been my hero.

#3 We used to own a school in Buffalo. My husband is really into education, and we opened and operated a school before moving to California.

#4 I love to travel and meet new people, experience new cultures, and try new delicacies. I have to say my favorite place is the South of France. St. Tropez incorporates beautiful people with a vibrant atmosphere and an amazing landscape.

#5 I have always wanted to go to Israel. I have heard it is an unforgettable spiritual experience.

#6 I have 2 dogs that are my everything. Gucci is an Australian Shepherd and Storm is a rescue terrier mix. They never leave my side, and I love it!

#7 With rising crime rates and situations occurring beyond our control, our San Diego Police Officers put their lives on the line every day for the communities they serve. I just hope I can make a small difference by giving back to the men and women who make a world of difference.

#8 With every civic amenity we enjoy, like our parks, beaches, mountain trails, or even our libraries and public schools, there is a gap between what the City budget can provide and what is actually needed. In the case of our police, filling that gap can be lifesaving.

#9 For the past 21 years, every police service dog at the San Diego Police Department has been purchased with funds donated by community members through the San Diego Police Foundation. These specialized canines safeguard public events, find missing persons, locate evidence, de-escalate dangerous situations, prevent shootings, and preserve life. Our Silver Soiree salutes America’s Finest police dogs and raises much-needed funds to purchase new canines.

#10 A strong police department and a strong community go hand in hand. Your ticket purchase or donation will help us ensure that those who protect and serve San Diego have what they need to do their job safely and with excellence.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
