“Live each day to the fullest”

Home Start’s mission is to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities. With the added stressors of the pandemic, unprecedented housing costs and increasing inflation, assistance is needed more than ever. Betsy McHenry is Home Start’s Volunteer Gala Chair of “Hallo-Wine” which is held each October in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

#1 I was born in El Paso, Texas but I grew up San Diego.

#2 My favorite travel destinations are anywhere in Canada, but I also love Greece, Istanbul and Italy.

#3 I would like to travel to Australia, New Zealand, African Safari, Scotland, Ireland, and lots of US States too.

#4 The advice I would give to my younger self: do not believe all the negative comments from bullies, trust your instincts and follow your dreams no matter what anyone says. Also, no matter how hard life is – I promise it will get better.

#5 I am a strong, confident, happy and blessed woman today because my husband has been by my side. After 40 years together, my love for him has grown.

#6 When I met my husband Ray, he saw something in me, that I did not see. He has shown me love and kindness and he is a great dad.

#7 I first was introduced to Home Start by a friend who was on the board and I loved the team and their mission of helping women, children and families.

#8 Thanks to caring partners in our community, Home Start staff can provide the resources and encouragement to create brighter futures. Together, we can help local children and families break free from the cycles of homelessness, domestic violence, abuse and neglect.

#9 “Anna” who enrolled in Home Start’s Community Services for Families Program shared that when she was 6 years old, she had to hose her mother down with water after her father had poured gasoline on her and threatened to light her on fire. For the next ten years, Anna was homeless and found herself in a domestic violence relationship. She eventually sought help from Home Start after her toddler “James” began to have night terrors and would hit her. Anna attributed James’ aggression to his witnessing unrelenting similar domestic abuse. Under the support and guidance of Anna’s caseworker, Anna completed her In-home Parenting Services curriculum, obtained a restraining order against her abuser, permanently moved in with her mother, and enrolled James into behavioral health services for therapy.

#10 Funds raised from Hallo-Wine support all of Home Start’s life-changing programs and services for local children and families, including domestic violence recovery services.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
