For more than 11 years, SBHIS Insurance Services has been dedicated to serving and empowering beneficiaries by helping them find the Medicare plan options that best suit their needs. One of their clients, Lidia S. Martinez (LHD ’22, SDSU) and Dr. Ted Martinez, Jr. share their experience with the Medicare-focused insurance agency.
How did you choose SBHIS?
In 2019, Ted kept getting letters from Medicare that were confusing and contradictory to our records. We tried calling and kept getting transferred to all the wrong departments. Because we did not pay the money they claimed we owed (without explanation), they cancelled Ted’s insurance. That was a painful experience. We had heard Pat Salas make a presentation that explained the services offered by SBHIS. So, we reached out for help. Within minutes, Pat responded and invited us to come see her right away.
How long had you been trying to fix your issue?
Before reaching out to SBHIS, we had been trying to get answers and explanations to letters we were receiving for months! Nobody should have to experience this frustration and fear of losing their healthcare. We cannot help to wonder how people with limited knowledge of the system, limited knowledge of their health benefits, limited knowledge of the English language, can navigate this complex system.
Was SBHIS able to help you?
YES! We are forever thankful to Pat and her team for providing these services, but mostly, for treating us with respect, dignity and compassion. They are experienced and smart professionals who know how to navigate the system and keep us from getting sick over the gross inefficiencies we have had to deal with by going directly to Medicare.
Would you recommend SBHIS to others?
We keep telling people about SBHIS because we know we are not the only ones dealing with these issues. People eligible for Medicare need to have compassionate advocates who can help them understand this unnecessarily cumbersome system. Compassion and patience are what you can expect from SBHIS. Pat and her team definitely exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend them.

¿Cuánto tiempo habían estado tratando de solucionar su problema?
¡Antes de llegar a SBHIS habíamos estado meses buscando recibir explicaciones y respuestas a las cartas que recibimos! Nadie debería pasar por esta frustración y por el temor de perder el seguro de salud. No podemos dejar de pensar en cómo hacen para navegar este complejo sistema las personas con limitado conocimiento del sistema, o de sus beneficios de salud, o con limitado dominio del idioma inglés.
¿Pudieron ayudarlos en SBHIS?
¡SI! Estaremos por siempre agradecidos a Pat y a su equipo por brindarnos estos servicios, pero aún más por tratarnos con respeto, dignidad y compasión. Son personas experimentadas y muy profesionales que saben cómo navegar el sistema y evitar que la falta de eficiencia nos enferme, como cuando nos tuvimos que enfrentar directamente a Medicare.
¿Recomendarían SBHIS?
No paramos de comentarles a las personas sobre SBHIS porque sabemos que no somos los únicos que tuvimos problemas. Las personas que pueden acceder a Medicare necesitan de personas compasivas que las defiendan y las ayuden a entender este innecesariamente complejo sistema. Compasión y paciencia es lo que ustedes pueden esperar de SBHIS; Pat y su equipo superaron ampliamente nuestras expectativas y son altamente recomendables.
