“Travel is fatal to prejudice.”
– Mark Twain

The mission of San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) is to serve and empower persons with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve their goals with community partners. SDRC serves over 47,000 individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties. SDRC is the starting point to determine eligibility for you or a loved one to receive services. Matthew Storey is the President of the SDRC Board.

#1 I grew up in Long Beach and Murrieta California.

#2 My hobbies include fishing, hiking, and basketball. I also make the best ribs you have ever had.

#3 “A Confederacy of Dunces” is one of my favorite books. There is a humor you can find in the hypocrisy of the protagonist that seems more relevant today than when the book was written.

#4 “Three Amigos” is the best movie. My friends and I watch it at least once a year and constantly are quoting from it.

#5 Traveling to Egypt, Turkey, and Japan are at the top of my list of places I hope to visit.

#6 My favorite travel destination is anywhere in the Sierra Mountains. I would really like to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with my boys in one go. We have done small parts, but it would be great to do the whole thing.

#7 I think it is important to help those around you. By doing so, you create a community, and without question you meet the best people.

#8 I was asked by another Board Member If I wanted to join SDRC, and it was an easy yes. Regional Center has been a part of my family’s life since I was little. I think it would be hard to find an organization that more directly impacts people in such a positive way.

#9 SDRC provides a variety of services to persons with developmental disabilities and their families. Services are based on the client’s individual needs and intended to maximize their independence, full potential, and quality of life.

#10 The SDRC 4th Annual Resource Fair is on Saturday, September 26 and is for the benefit of the people we serve with developmental disabilities and their families. It is FREE to the public. The Resource Fair is a unique event featuring booths from local organizations, service providers, and community partners. Attendees will experience on-site information, interactive activities, breakout sessions, and opportunities to connect directly with valuable support systems.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
