The Westgate Hotel has been a driving force and a source of vibrant energy in the heart of downtown San Diego since opening its doors in the 1970s. Designed with France’s famous Palace of Versailles in mind, the goal is to create meaningful experiences that unite travelers and locals, from curated events to authentic partnerships, all while highlighting the unique offerings of the hotel. Guided by General Manager Annie Fitzgerald, she shows that true leadership is ultimately about building community.

GB: As General Manager, what moments and milestones are you most proud of under your leadership?

One of the things I am most proud of is the incredible team behind the Westgate Hotel. Our housekeeping department alone represents more than 300 years of combined service, which speaks volumes about the culture, loyalty, and passion here. Hospitality is ultimately about people, and it is that dedication that allows us to consistently deliver elevated guest experiences.

That spirit was especially evident following the historic rainfall in San Diego on January 22, 2024, when flooding impacted parts of the hotel. Our team came together in an extraordinary way, and the rebuilding process gave us an opportunity to thoughtfully refresh several spaces.

I am also very proud of the recognition our team has received. Leaders like Silvia Karstens and Bia Krause have earned prestigious industry awards, as well as several members of our leadership team. On a personal note, I was honored to be promoted to Vice President of Operations for Grand America Hotels & Resorts while continuing to lead the Westgate Hotel.

GB: What philanthropic initiatives or community partnerships is the Westgate involved in locally?

Community engagement is a core part of our culture. We are proud to support a wide range of nonprofit organizations throughout San Diego by contributing time, resources, and services to causes that make a meaningful impact.

Some of the organizations we have supported include Kiwanis San Diego, St. Paul’s Senior Services Foundation, Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Our team also participates in hunger relief efforts, such as food drives benefiting Feeding San Diego and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

In addition, we have hosted a blood drive in partnership with the American Heart Association and proudly support community celebrations like San Diego Pride. We also maintain a strong relationship with the San Diego Symphony. These partnerships are incredibly important to us – they reflect our commitment to giving back and staying connected to the community that has supported us for so many years.

GB: Looking ahead, what exciting initiatives or events can the San Diego community look forward to?

We are very excited about what is ahead. One of the biggest milestones is the upcoming 10-year anniversary of AquaVie Fitness + Wellness Club, which we plan to celebrate with special programming for both members and guests.

On the culinary side, we are introducing new seasonal menus at Bonne Vie Brasserie & Bar, along with fresh offerings at Vie Café. We are also preparing enhancements to the AquaVie pool deck, which will host a series of summer poolside events.

Guests can also look forward to our popular themed afternoon teas and a curated lineup of holiday events that have become a beloved tradition in San Diego.
