#1 I grew up in Los Angeles and Orange County.

#2 No one in my family is a scientist and my mom encouraged me even when she did not understand what an ecologist does. And, although I am not a filmmaker or work in the film industry, she wholeheartedly supported my creating and co-founding the San Diego Environmental Film Festival because she believed in me when I said social good storytelling can change the world.

#3 My favorite travel destination is any rainforest where I can hike and explore the plants and animals, such as Olympic National Forest, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica.

#4 It is on my bucket list to climb to the base camp of Yale Peak or Mera Peak in Nepal.

#5 I recently read “Thirty Below: The Harrowing and Heroic Story of the First All-Women’s Ascent of Denali” by Cassidy Randall. It tells the story of the 1970 expedition where six women successfully summited the 20,000+ foot mountain in Alaska, against all odds, both weather and gender discrimination in the mountaineering world.

#6 My hobbies are hiking and looking for the yummiest restaurants wherever I visit.

#7 I fundamentally believe people want to do good. When we give back, we support our community to make progress in creating a kind, beautiful, and wonderful place to live in. A place where every person and animal have equitable access to social good and environmental health.

#8 I got involved with WILDCOAST because this organization is working on three very important things that help San Diego and our world move forward: coastal and marine protection, scientific research, and fostering an engaged and hopeful community.

#9 WILDCOAST is making a transformational impact on all these fronts regionally and globally; they are taking the lead at an important time in history, when we are encountering drastic challenges to our environmental and social well-being. I am grateful for the team at WILDCOAST who gives me hope every day.

#10 Our annual fundraiser, the Baja Bash, supports our projects – everything from safeguarding California’s underwater parks and wetlands, stopping plastic pollution from entering the Pacific to protecting coral reefs, sea turtle nesting beaches, mangrove forests, wild lands, and gray whale lagoons in Mexico.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
