Just in Time for Foster Youth: Empowering San Diego Young Adults

Share

Based in San Diego, Just in Time for Foster Youth is dedicated to supporting transition-age foster youth as they move into adulthood. Through a strong, caring community, the organization helps young people build the confidence, skills, and connections needed to thrive independently.

A Mission Rooted in Community

Just in Time for Foster Youth works to engage a compassionate network that empowers individuals ages 18 to 26 who are leaving the foster care system. Without consistent family support, many young adults face uncertainty and instability. JIT provides a reliable, responsive community to help them become confident, capable, and connected.

Real Support from People Who Understand

What makes JIT unique is its lived experience—more than half of its staff are former foster youth, many of whom have participated in JIT programs themselves. This creates a relatable, real, and supportive environment where participants are guided by people who truly understand their journey.

Comprehensive Youth Services

JIT offers a range of personalized services designed to support long-term independence and well-being, including:

  • Basic Needs & Furnishings– Helping youth create stable living environments
  • Meaningful Employment– Career support and job readiness programs
  • Reliable Transportation– Access to transportation for work and education
  • Healthy Practices & Wellbeing– Physical and mental health support
  • Essential Education– Guidance for academic success and continued learning
  • Financial Literacy– Building skills for long-term financial stability

Participants are welcomed into a supportive network and guided through an onboarding process that includes eligibility verification and orientation, ensuring they receive the right support from the start.

Addressing a Critical Need

Youth exiting the foster care system often encounter challenges such as housing insecurity, limited resources, and lack of guidance. JIT bridges this gap by offering consistent, relationship-based support—ensuring that no young person has to navigate adulthood alone.

A Story That Started with Compassion

Founded in 2003, Just in Time began with a simple act of kindness—delivering holiday gift baskets to young people aging out of foster care. What started as a small effort has grown into a powerful organization supporting thousands of youth across San Diego County.

A Vision for the Future

Just in Time envisions a future where every young person leaving foster care has access to a supportive community beyond age 18. By fostering long-term relationships and meaningful engagement, the organization helps youth achieve stability, independence, and a sense of belonging.

Community Impact

Through thousands of volunteer hours, strong partnerships, and dedicated supporters, Just in Time for Foster Youth continues to transform lives—empowering young people to build brighter, more stable futures.
