At Southwest Airlines, we celebrate our culture, heritage, and pride by focusing on the diverse partnerships and programs that help shape and make a positive impact in their communities. Southwest Airlines has been a core supporter and partner of the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs for many years. Every Spring, a group of middle and high school “Chavistas” make a trip to Washington, D.C. to learn firsthand about our nation’s history. For most of the Chavistas, this is their first time on a plane trip. We are proud to support their mission of inspiring young people to believe in themselves and to know that they can make a difference.

Empowering the Next Generation
In the vibrant neighborhoods throughout San Diego, a movement is growing. The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs was founded on a simple vision: that young people, regardless of their zip code, possess the inherent power to transform their communities through the values of leadership, service, and social justice. By channeling the legacy and teachings of Cesar Chavez, the Chavez Clubs empowers students to become leaders. These students, who proudly call themselves “Chavistas,” do not just dream of a better world; they organize, advocate, and work diligently to create one. Our mission is to inspire young people to believe in themselves, and know they can make a difference. We do that by providing the tools, the confidence, and the platform necessary for them to lead.
Taking Flight with Southwest Airlines – A huge bonus to our program is expanding the horizons of our students, quite literally. We are immensely grateful for our longstanding partnership with Southwest Airlines, whose generosity has allowed us to build a bridge to new opportunities. Every year, Southwest provides round-trip tickets that allow our Chavistas to embark on a life-changing journey to Washington, D.C. For many of these students, this is more than just a trip; it is a series of “firsts” that define their youth. It is the first time boarding an aircraft, the first time seeing the Atlantic coast, and the first time walking the halls of power they have only ever seen in textbooks. Standing before the Lincoln Memorial or meeting with Congressional representatives transforms their perspective on what is possible. Because of Southwest’s support, our students return home not just as travelers, but as global citizens who understand they have a permanent seat at the table in our nation’s capital.
A Vision for the Decade Ahead – As we look toward the future, the vision for Chavez Clubs is one of sustainable growth, deepened roots, and a vastly expanded reach. Over the next five to ten years, our primary goal is to fortify our current clubs while strategically expanding our presence throughout the entirety of San Diego County. We are on an ambitious mission to double the number of students we serve, ensuring that the “Si, Se Puede” spirit reaches every corner of our region and empowers a new generation of leaders. To achieve this, we are focused on building sincere, long-term relationships with local community groups to create a robust safety net of support for our youth. Additionally, we are dedicated to consistently refining our fundraising skills and organizational capacity to ensure our programs remain free and accessible.
The Full Circle of Leadership – Perhaps our greatest point of pride is that our organization is now led by the very people we set out to serve. While we operate with a small team, 75% of our staff members are Chavista Alumni. This “full circle” impact ensures that our leadership truly understands the student experience. A shining example of this transformation is one of our newest Board of Directors members, who joined Chavez Clubs in the 4th grade and remained active through 12th grade. After graduating from college, they returned to help steer the entire organization. At Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, we believe that when you pour into young children, you are not just helping them today; you are building the foundation for the leaders of tomorrow. With the continued support of partners like Southwest Airlines, we will keep soaring toward a more just, equitable, and empowered world.
