Annie Fitzgerald Leads with Heart and Community at The Westgate Hotel

Annie Fitzgerald has always been more than just a general manager at the Westgate Hotel – she is the kind of leader who makes every day feel personal. Instead of staying tucked away in an office, she is often out on the floor, chatting with staff and making sure every guest feels right at home.

From the start, Annie made it clear that everyone matters. No matter if someone has just joined the team or has been around for years, she takes the time to listen and connect. It is this belief that a hotel should feel like a family that drives her every decision. Rather than imposing strict rules from above, she fosters honest conversations and encourages new ideas, inspiring the team to go the extra mile.

But Annie’s care does not stop at the hotel doors. She is equally committed to the local community, often saying that true hospitality means looking after the people around you. You will often find Annie and The Westgate team rolling up their sleeves alongside groups like Downtown San Diego Kiwanis, cheering on the vibrant energy of San Diego Pride, collaborating with the Downtown San Diego Partnership, and working with the San Diego County Lodging Association. It is not just about writing a check; it is about being present and being part of the solution. For Annie, it boils down to something really simple: giving back and opening doors for others.

A standout moment was in 2024, when The Westgate stepped up as the official Travel Sponsor for San Diego Pride. The hotel hosted a special reception for InterPride, showing its dedication to building an inclusive space where everyone is welcome. And it does not end there – Annie makes sure that supporting the community is a regular part of the hotel’s routine, with regular donations and active participation in local events.

Her forward-thinking even goes beyond community service. Concerned about the environment, Annie has pushed for meaningful changes at The Westgate. The hotel’s switch to 95% LED lighting, the implementation of a modern heat-exchange system, and a strong effort in reducing waste have all contributed to earning the 2024 Good Earthkeeping Award at the San Diego Gold Key Awards. These practical steps show just how much she cares about both people and the planet.

At the heart of it all, Annie Fitzgerald proves that leadership all comes down to community-building. Her advice is simple and heartfelt – “Build strong relationships and surround yourself with people who inspire you to do better. The more we lift others, the greater our collective impact will be.”
