#1 Karen Pearson grew up on the beautiful island of Honolulu, Hawaii.

#2 Spain is my favorite travel destination. The country is full of rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. The food is also incredible, having churros in Spain is a different experience! Not to mention the warm hospitality of the people; it is a very special place.

#3 One place that I would absolutely love to visit is Argentina. Between the culture, food, nature, and hospitality, I have placed it high on my list.

#4 I find that movement and stillness are both the best antidote for decompressing. For me, I can never go wrong with a good Pilates class! And morning meditations really make a big difference in my day.

#5 When Harry Met Sally is a classic. I feel like the movie is so timeless and the humor and witty dialogue make it easy to rewatch.

#6 I have an absolutely lovable rescue schnoodle name Buddy Joy.

#7 Karen Pearson would recommend the book Hamilton by Ron Chernow. It is a fascinating and in-depth biography of Alexander Hamilton. If you are a fan of the Broadway musical, this book provides even more context and depth to his incredible story.

#8 It is on my bucket list to go skydiving. It is a classic, and for good reason! It seems like an unforgettable, adrenaline-filled experience. I think of it as both a test of courage and a way to embrace my more adventurous side.

#9 I have been given so much in this life; I feel a deep calling to give back and help others to progress in their own life.

#10 The theme of this year’s gala – “Lighting a Path to Belonging” – highlights TrueCare’s mission to advance youth development through comprehensive health programs and services that promote the development, growth, and sense of belonging every step of the way for infants, children, teens, and young adults. By focusing on critical social determinants of health, such as access to care, nutrition, literacy, and behavioral health, your support helps ensure that our community’s children are well-positioned for long-term success and improved health.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
