The Mainly Mozart Festival

Each May and June, the Mainly Mozart Festival fills San Diego with concerts that celebrate classical music and innovation.
During the six-week summer festival, thousands of people enjoy performances that honor Mozart’s genius and inspire creativity across generations.

Concertmasters and top musicians from leading orchestras across the country come together to form the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra — a highlight of San Diego’s summer arts scene.

Our Music Programs

Mainly Mozart offers several exciting programs throughout the year:

Mozart & the Mind:

A fun, science-meets-music event led by neuroscientist Tim Mullen. It explores how music affects the brain and emotions.

Evolution Series:

Created by pianist Stephen Prutsman, this program mixes classical, jazz, and modern styles to show how music continues to grow.

Chamber Players

Directed by cellist Ronald Thomas, this series features small-group performances that complement the orchestral concerts.

Spotlight Chamber Music Series

Curated by pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, this long-running series presents Mozart and other masters in intimate spaces from January through June.

Education and Community

Mainly Mozart believes music should be for everyone.
Last year, the organization:

  • Gave away over 1,000 free tickets to families in need
  • Hosted free concerts around San Diego
  • Held concerts for children and young adults on the autism spectrum
  • Organized 24 in-school programs in Tijuana

Mainly Mozart also formed the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra (MMYO), the first orchestra-in-residence at The New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego. The youth orchestra gives young musicians a chance to perform and learn from professionals.

Esteban Villanueva
Esteban Villanueva was born in Washington D.C. and raised in La Jolla. He attended both Francis Parker and The Bishop’s School locally before going to Dartmouth College where he received his B.S. in Biology and Pepperdine School of Law where he received his J.D. focusing Entertainment Law. He worked in the Latin music industry where his projects went on to win 14 Grammy Awards for artists including Ricky Martin and Carlos Santana. After starting GB Magazine with Danitza Villanueva in 2007, he has gone on to win awards and recognition from the community for his support of helping raise millions of dollars for non-profit organizations. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Air & Space Museum and resides in East County in San Diego where he and his wife Danitza run DAESVI Publishing, home to GB Magazine, among several other publications.
