SNAP San Diego (Spay-Neuter Action Project) is a nonprofit that helps reduce pet overpopulation through affordable spay and neuter services. Since 1990, the team has worked to save thousands of dogs, cats, and rabbits across San Diego County by preventing unwanted litters and keeping pets out of shelters.
It All Began at a Shelter
In 1990, a group of women volunteering at a local shelter saw too many stray animals come and go. They knew adoptions alone could not solve the problem. There were simply more pets than homes.
So, founders Diane Calkins, Maggie Houlihan, Barbara Rosenbaum, Candy Schumann, and Rosemary Shelton decided to act. They created a guide of low-cost spay and neuter clinics in San Diego County to help people prevent unwanted litters.
Soon after, the group became an affordable provider themselves. SNAP San Diego became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1995 and a registered charity in 1996. Volunteers and medical professionals joined together with one goal — to end pet overpopulation and stop unnecessary euthanasia in shelters.
In 2003, they launched the Neuter Scooter, a mobile surgical bus that travels into local communities. This bus brings low-cost spay and neuter services directly to areas where families need them most.
Our Mission
The mission of SNAP San Diego is simple:
Fewer homeless pets, fewer animals in shelters, and more lives saved.
Two unaltered cats and their kittens can have over 400,000 kittens in six years. Two unaltered dogs can have 67,000 puppies in that same time. With numbers like these, prevention is key.
Sadly, many people cannot keep their pets for a lifetime. Some move away, face health issues, or cannot afford pet care. Others simply do not find homes for new litters. This leads to more animals on the streets or in overcrowded shelters.
By offering low-cost surgeries and education, SNAP San Diego helps families be part of the solution — not the problem.
